So, you wanna know how to drop a pin in Google Maps?
We’ll get to that. But first, some intro for you.
Nowadays, finding an address is simple. Type it in the search box of a browser and the result comes back almost instantly.
But it is not that easy in 100% of the cases.
For instance, if the location does not have a defined address, or if the address is wrong, this method will not work. In those cases, it is easier to drop a pin to specify the location.
With the pin localized and saved, it is very easy to retrieve the location and to share it with friends. You can meet anywhere, whether it has an actual address or not.
So how does one drop a pin in Google Maps? This article shows how to do it on a desktop computer or a mobile device.
On Mobile Devices
With its latest updates, Google has made it even easier to drop a pin. Users can now perform this operation from the search box.
This is automatically done whenever searching from the search box. When using the map interface instead of the search feature tap and hold the location to drop the pin.
These are the steps to follow:
- Open the Google Maps app on the iPhone or Android device.
- Use the search box to locate the address, or browse on the map to find the location.
- Tap and hold the location on the screen to drop a pin. A light touch will do.
The pin is now ready for use.
One of the options that appears is Directions. Tapping this option gives a route to or from the pin location.
To save the pin for later use, tap Label on the option on the pin and give the pin a name. Please note that the Google Maps apps on Android and Apple work a little differently.
On an Android device tap the information box at the bottom of the screen to see the options. To retrieve the pin, go to Your Places and look for the name used for the desired pin.
Finally, to remove the pin, zoom out and tap the X in the box named Dropped Pin or Specific Location.
On a Computer
Because mobile devices are portable and work on the road, people often use them for consulting Google Maps. However, before starting a trip it is useful to consult a map or calculate a route at home.
At these times a laptop or a desktop computer comes in handy.
The method for dropping a pin in Google Maps is the same, regardless of the device used. Whether a Chromebook, a Mac, or a Windows PC, these are the steps to follow:
In all cases, the first step is to open the web browser and navigate to the Google Maps website. Once on the website, the procedure is very much the same as for mobile devices.
There are again two options available.
The first is to search for a location using the search bar. The second is to scroll through the map and click on a location to drop a pin.
In the web version of Google Maps, any selected pin will appear blue. Other pins that are not selected appear grey.
When a pin is selected, other features become available. It shows which other landmarks, like restaurants, are nearby.
At the bottom of the page, a small box with coordinates and photos appears. Clicking the location name in this box will open a menu on the left with more information.
By clicking the Directions button, users get directions to the location from their current location. The user can also define a custom starting point or destination.
Click Add a Label to give it a custom label, for example, ‘Work’ or ‘Frank’s House”.
Click Share to share the location with others. It is also possible to send a pin to a different device that is linked with a Google account.
Or send the pin via text message or email by clicking on the corresponding options.
Click Save in the additional information screen to save the pin for later use. There are different options for saving a pin, either in Favorites, New List, Starred Places, or Want to Go.
To find them again, go to the Main Menu, then Your Places.
Dropping Multiple Pins On a Desktop
Normally, users can only drop one pin at a time. This means they have to save each individual pin in order to save multiple pins.
But is it possible to show multiple pins in one view and have an overview of the relation between the different locations? Yes, it is.
To do this, make a personalized map. This is the way to make a personal map in Google Maps:
- Go to the Google Maps website.
- Sign in to Google. To use Google Maps and drop pins, it is not necessary to sign in to a Google account. But to save pins and to create a map, this step is necessary.
- Click the menu icon in the top left corner.
- Here, click Your Places > Maps > Create Map. These actions will open a new window with a customizable map.
- Click on Untitled Map to change the Map title and description. Click Save.
- Add pins by using the search bar, or by clicking the pin icon at the top and then the location on the map.
Other Custom Maps Options
It is also possible to add directions between locations and customize the view. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click on the arrow icon below the search box. This creates a new layer with an information box on the left.
- In the direction layer on the left click the starting location box and then on the pin that is the starting point. The name of the pin will now appear in the starting location box.
- Do the same for the destination. The route is now visible on the map.
- Customize the appearance by clicking the paint roller labeled Individual Styles.
How to Share a Pin
There are different ways to share a dropped pin in Google Maps with someone else.
One option is to share the location directly from the pin. To do this, click the pin and click Share Place in the popup menu.
From this option chose the method of sharing. This could be by email, text message, WhatsApp, or another integrated app.
The user is then redirected to the selected app. Select the contact and press Send.
To create a list of locations in Google Maps, go to New List and create a list with locations when saving a pin. Add any additional pins to this list.
When the list is complete, click on Menu and Share List to send it to friends.
