How to Find Elevation on Google Maps Easily

Google Maps is one the most popular websites on the internet. It has a large number of useful options and features.

Google Maps has changed how people find their way from A to B. This is because of its many features and its mobility.

One of the lesser-known features it offers is terrain and elevation information. This view of a hilly or mountainous area gives a much better feel of what the area actually looks like. 

This is especially useful when traveling in a mountainous area. Yet few people know how to get Google Maps to display this view.

This article shows how to find elevation on Google Maps.

Elevations on Google Maps in a Web Browser

  • Search for a location, either by typing an address or location in the search bar or by dragging the map around with the mouse to find a specific spot. Now Google Maps will only show an estimated elevation for the location.
  • Click on Menu. This is in the top left corner, displayed as three horizontal bars.
  • Click Terrain to show elevation and topography. At the bottom of the map, there is a slider.

Make sure that this is set to View topography and elevation. It turns blue when it is on. If necessary, change it by clicking the slider.

  • Click the + sign at the bottom right corner of the map to zoom in to the area of interest. Numbers will start appearing the more the map zooms in.

However, when zoomed in too much, it will not show contour lines anymore. Click the – sign to zoom out.

Exact altitudes are not available for all parts of the world but Google Maps will give a good idea of the terrain.

Elevations on Google Maps on a Mobile Device

  • Type the location into the search bar.
  • In the app, click on the Map icon, which is in the top right corner. Choose Terrain under Map Type.

When using the browser version, click the Menu bar in the top left and select Terrain. These actions will change the appearance by showing terrain morphology.

  • To close the menu in the app, tap the grey “X” in the top right corner. Elevation lines are now visible, which will adjust when zooming in or out.

The elevation lines are the grey lines that indicate different elevations. The elevation values are faintly visible along the elevation lines

  • To zoom out, put two fingers on the map and move them apart. To zoom in, squeeze fingers together.

View a Path’s Elevation Profile

A new feature that has not received much attention was recently introduced in version 5.2. It is the elevation profile feature.

It is easy to use. Select a path under My Places, go to Edit, and select Show Elevation Profile.

This is how to do it:

  • Open Google Earth.
  • Either draw a path or open an existing one. To draw a path, draw a straight line with the Add Path tool.

Also, use this tool to draw a path. If the path is already marked on Google Earth, use the Get Directions feature.

  • Right-click on the blue line and select Show Elevation Profile. On Mac use CTRL+click.

An elevation profile will now appear in the bottom part of the screen. If the measurement shows nothing, make sure that the terrain layer is activated.

To see the distance and elevation at a specific point along the path move the mouse over the path. To zoom in to a portion of the path, click and drag over the desired area.

  • To change the measurement units, select Tools, then Options. Change to Foot or Meters under Units of Measurement.
  • To change the measurement units on a Mac, select Google Earth, then Preferences. Change to Foot or Meters under Units of Measurement.

At this moment it is not possible to export an elevation graph. For short paths, it’s possible to export the numerical values (distance, elevation) into a spreadsheet program.

Elevation Gain along Your Route

The feature that shows elevation changes along a path is useful for those engaging in sports. Sports fanatics can use it to plan their daily workout or fitness program.

Even someone that has only an hour for lunch, can use this short time to get the blood pumping.

It may also be of use for those with limited movement. It is useful for them to know whether a holiday destination is suitable for them.

In Google Maps users can specify that they are a cyclist. Maps will then add a special panel on the left.

Type the starting point and the destination and it will show a profile of the selected route. It only displays this feature if the bicycle is selected.

Moving the mouse over the elevation profile shows the elevation change at that point. It also shows the overall change in altitude, the number of meters or feet to climb, and the part of the route that goes downhill.

Only the flat sections are not shown.

On a budget and looking for free mapping software? I know that feeling.

Not too long ago, making a custom map required extensive knowledge and experience. It involved the use of a complex and expensive geographic information system (GIS). Now, there are various map makers available online. These map makers require only a few clicks to make a personalized map.

There are many different mapping software options available, depending on your needs. What kind of maps do you want to show? How do you want to show it? What kind of interface do you prefer?

The following article gives a list of ten free mapping software options. All of these serve to create custom maps, ranging from simple maps to sophisticated interactive ones.

Free Mapping Software To Try

Google My Maps

Many people are familiar with the service that and Google maps provide, including the route planner. My Maps is an additional, less well-known product that allows people to create simple, customized maps. This app works on a desktop computer or a portable Android device.

The pins that Google Maps uses to mark places are well known. My Maps uses the same pins, but the user can add customized information to it. Also, the user can adjust the color code of the maps. This tool is ideal for planning vacations, highlighting business locations, or map delivery locations.

It is very practical for sharing information with friends, family, or business partners. It integrates with Google Sheets, so it can upload and update information in spreadsheet format.


In the field of open-source GIS software, QGIS is a big player. QGIS3 is their third major release. QGIS3’s core philosophy is that of the open-source principle. Its aim is to break free from the common commercial GIS options.

This third release is now in 3D. However, with the introduction of this new feature, QGIS has lost nothing of its famed power.

Whitebox GAT

Map Chart

The next option on this free mapping software list is Map Chart. This tool allows the user to make maps for school or work projects that look very professional. It offers maps of single countries, regions, continents, and the entire globe. All these maps are customizable.

Map Chart enables you to make a map quickly and easily. Click on a country or region and change the color. Then add a title and description. Finally, preview the map to see if everything looks fine and download the map. Other options are the use of patterns, hide countries or regions, and zoom.


Multiplottr is a fast and simple tool. This is a good option for making a map with a highlighted location pin for, for example, a PowerPoint presentation. This mapping tool is even easier than Google My Maps.

Copy and paste the address or address in the plotline and click Plot. Then save maps, edit pins, or add legends to the map if needed. There are many more options to choose from. So, whether it is for a quick and simple map or a more sophisticated chart, MultiPlottr is the right tool.


ZeeMaps is a no-nonsense online custom mapping service. As such, it has limitations. Yet, it stands out because it offers more technical options than most of the online map-making tools.

ZeeMaps can import information from a spreadsheet and use it as the map’s base layer. This is, in fact, a function that most GISs have, but ZeeMaps’ transformation is easy.

A fun and modern feature is the crowdsourcing option. For example, someone can publish a map of a certain area and request the help of the community to locate all hamburger restaurants in the area.


SAGA is an acronym for System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses and is popular for good reason.

SAGA’s area of expertise is geoscientific analysis. It is capable of LiDAR data processing and 3D visualization. These features make SAGA specialized free mapping software.

This powerful tool processes raster and analyzes terrain and other geoscientific data. This makes SAGA particularly popular for more technical applications.

Other features of SAGA are the geostatistics tools. Predictive exercises are within reach with the regression analysis and semi-variograms. These are complex and advanced processes, but according to users, they are easy to relatively easy to use.


gvSIG is an excellent free option. It has a field app, 3D capabilities, and a desktop application.

It does not have English documentation, however, the gvSIG is easy to work with and it does not have a steep learning curve. The NavTable is one of its responsive tools and shows individual records vertically.

The CAD tools included in gvSIG are impressive. OpenCAD Tools is an open-source version and it allows the user to trace geometries, snap and split lines, and edit vertices.

There is also a mobile-compatible version available. This, combined with GPS tools make this a great option for fieldwork.


Technically speaking SnazzyMaps is not a map builder. It improves the appearance of maps by applying different design templates to them. It works by extracting maps from Google Maps, which can then be made ready for publication on the web. This is a good free option for web designers who want to publish professional-looking maps but without custom coding.

SnazzyMaps offer different default styles to choose from. These include dark, light, and monochrome overlays.

Using SnazzyMaps is very simple. Go to the map builder page and enter the required information. Choose a language, markers, size, and style, then download the result and use it for a commercial or personal project.


DIVA-GIS is a free computer program for mapping and geographical data analysis. It also makes maps of the world or smaller areas. It can indicate state boundaries, rivers, show satellite images, and other special distributions. The information that DIVA-GIS offers is free to use, either with DIVA itself or a different GIS program.


OpenStreetMap, or OSM, is an open-source mapping platform, developed by a global community of voluntary mappers.

It offers good mapping options offered, however, it lacks geospatial analysis tools. Its simplicity also makes it easy to work with, so is a good choice for map-making and web development beginners.  It is also frequently used by hikers to map trails.

The current information on OpenStreetMaps is maintained by contributors from the worldwide community. They enter new information about railways, roads, trails, and many other relevant points of interest.

The disadvantage is that OSM does not use an approval or review process. Any information that is entered by any contributor will be immediately published for all to see.


BatchGeo was released in 2006. It is an easy way of getting a list of addresses on one map. It has been used to publish millions of maps.  Its customers include large international companies, non-profit organizations, and private individuals.

Often geographical data is organized and stored in spreadsheets, using Excel, or Google Sheets. BatchGeo facilitates the use of this data, by allowing the user to import their data using a spreadsheet file. The information is imported into a map by drag-and-drop or copy-paste methods.

After entering the information, all data points are laid out on an easy-to-navigate Google Map.

An additional feature of BatchGeo is the routing option. It allows the user to optimize routes for up to 23 points. This optimizes travel time when visiting many customers. Map sharing is also very easy.


Click2Map is a practical free mapping software tool, for making customized maps. It contains a large library of markers. The user can use them to show specific places and add extra information and interactivity.

With Click2Map, the user can add lines and other shapes to their maps. These can be used to indicate or highlight certain areas. After making all the adjustments to the map, download it and embed it without cost.

Excel 3D Maps

This app is fully integrated with Office 365. It is popular for organizing and managing geographical data. Excel 3D Maps uses Excel to plot maps. It is straightforward and easy to learn, with many customizable options.

Excel 3D Maps displays geographical maps, as well as making thematic maps, such as a heat map or a time-based growth chart. It breathes life into data and makes attractive and impressive maps.

There are unique ways to add more information to a map with Excel 3D Maps. The user can, for instance, add a three-digit zip code boundary to a map. It requires some extra skill, but the method is easily retrievable with a Google search.


Maptitude started as a mapping program for businesses. In recent years, it has started to explore other applications as well. It now includes any kind of spatial analysis. It integrates with Microsoft office. Familiarity with the Caliper Script programming language is a requirement.

Maptitude only asks for the geocoded address and the software will do the rest. It is cloud-based and is also a location intelligence tool. It allows the analyses of any kind of spatial data.

Maptide offers the option of a free trial and their paid subscriptions are very affordable.


GRASS GIS is usually referred to as GRASS, which is short for Geographic Resources Analysis Support System.

Originally developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, GRASS is a program for land management and environmental planning. Now it has become a GIS tool for various areas of investigation.

GRASS finds use in academia, environment consultants, and government agencies like NASA and USDA. GRASS enjoys such popularity because of its practical graphical user interface and dependability.

There are over 350 reliable vector and raster manipulations tools available in this program. Its primary use is mainly for GIS for analysis, image processing, statistics, digital terrain manipulation.

Scribble Maps

Scribble Maps is an online GIS and mapping platform. It is simple and easily familiarized. The user can annotate, filter data, geocode, measure distances, make interactive maps, optimize routes, and much more.

Scribble has a team portal that allows teams to work together on a project. It is therefore an ideal option for larger organizations. It can export maps in a variety of ways and integrates with existing workflows.

The programming interface that Scribble Maps offers is specially included for software programmers. They can use this feature to continue using the Scribble Maps’ features outside its website.

Scribble Maps has much to offer those interested in the technical aspects but is simple enough to engage beginners and less technical persons in map-making.


Unearth was specially designed for people in the physical industries. It has map-making and data management abilities. It is great for larger teams to work together, even if they are working in different locations.

This is a cloud-based mapping platform, which allows communal access to collect and share data. Therefore a person’s location is irrelevant.

The user interface is simple and straightforward, helping the user to make a map fast and easy in only minutes Unearth offers modifiable satellite images by overlaying drawings, shapes, and measurements.

Unearth can also be used on mobile devices. It comes in an iOS and an Android version. This is very practical for recording data while in the field.


MapTiler is used by companies such as Apple, Google, and NASA. Its popularity is due to the many features it offers, making it well suited for making map tiles from geodata. These map tiles are used in Google Maps API mashups, Google Earth, MapQuest, and Microsoft Bing, to name a few.

MapTiler is downloadable in a version for Linux, Mac, or Windows. There is a free trial version, but additional features are available in one of the four paid versions. The number of features depends on the specific bundle.


OpenJUMP, as the name indicates, is open and free to use. This GIS software is JAVA-based and is powerful enough to handle large datasets. It was developed by a large GIS community. JUMP stands for Java Unified Mapping Platform.

OpenJump can analyze data, read and write shape files, and interpret various vector formats. This gives OpenJUMP the ability to read and edit geometry. This is supported by the feature that allows the program to connect with third-party spatial databases.

Even though it is free software, OpenJUMP is a very capable visualization tool. It makes choropleth maps, pie charts, and plots, making this an above-average platform.

Additional plugins are available to expand the capabilities of OpenJUMP. There are plugins for manipulating rasters, accessing large databases, and conducting spatial analysis.


TillMill caters to the needs of those who want to make a map quickly and easily. It offers plenty of custom data. It is based on Mapnik, an open-source maps rendering database. This is the same database that is behind OpenStreetMap and MapQuest.

TileMill is not made for every map-making application. It is more for simplifying the needs of a small group of web designers.


uDig is free and the acronym  stands for:

u: user interface, which is made to be friendly and practical.

D: Desktop. uDIG runs on Linux, Mac, and Windows.

i: Internet-oriented consuming standard. The standard includes WFS, WMS, and WPS.

g: GIS-ready. It has capabilities for complex analysis.

uDig too uses Mapnik, the open-source mapping database. Its main use is in basic mapping projects. It is built around the Eclipse Rich Client (RCP) technology. This enables the user to build complex analytical data, within a user-friendly framework.

How To Map Addresses From Excel In A Few Easy Steps

If you want to map addresses from Excel there are a variety of tools available. These tools speed up the process, saving valuable time and effort.

Whether the addresses are from personal or professional lists, these tools allow users to generate a map. Once created, users can share their map with others.

The map is interactive allowing viewers to click on markers. Once selected the markers can expand providing additional information about the locations.

There is a provision for grouping columns together. This allows viewers to choose which sets of data to display.

Raw location-based data such as addresses can become interactive and accessible maps. This post will offer examples of tools that can assist you in making an icon map from a list of addresses.

How to prepare the location data

Locations displayed on a map use geographic coordinates. This means that each address on the spreadsheet will need geographic coordinates.

This is achievable by using a process called geocoding. Geocoding takes a text-based description of a location, such as an address or the name of a place, and returns geographical coordinates.

They are set out as a latitude-longitude pair that identifies a location on the Earth’s surface.

The text input can represent an individual address or multiple addresses. These can be displayed in a table.

The output supplies users with geographic coordinates. These can form the basis for spatial analysis or mapping.

Addresses can be input in a variety of formats, such as house numbers, street names, and postal codes.

It is also possible to include points of interest or locations from a gazetteer. Users may add geographical locations such as stores, lakes, and bridges by name.

Having obtained the needed geographical coordinates it is now possible to map addresses from Excel.

Tools to map addresses from Excel

Below are a few of the tools available to help map addresses from Excel, and guidance on how to use them. Some of the tools include instructions for using a specific geocoder.

Import the data from a CSV file.

The first line of the CSV file must contain field names. Fields must be comma-separated, and lowercase (“title”, not “Title”).

Text fields that contain a comma must be surrounded with double quotes “…”. Before importing the CSV file create all fields in the ‘Database > Edit fields’ section.

Also, if importing the Location field, first choose the language of the addresses. Find this in ’Database > Edit fields > Location > Language’.

Please note that Google allows only 50 requests per second to the Geocoding API (which converts the address to coordinates). If importing many locations it can take quite a long time. Be patient and don’t reload the page. Also, Geocoding API has a limit of 2500 requests per day.

Google Maps

Log in to your Google account. Go to Google My Maps.

In the welcome pop-up, select ”Create a new map”.

Click the text “Untitled map” to edit the map title and description. It is best if the title relates to the data, such as “vacation” or “clients”.

In the menu select ”Import”.

Select the CSV from your desktop. This will be the first data layer to upload.

Tip: Users can also import an XLSX file or a Google Sheet. It’s possible to upload a table containing up to 2,000 rows (see supported data formats and limits here).

After uploading the data, users must select the column(s) with location information. This places the data correctly on the map (e.g. columns with latitude and longitude information).

For this example, select the Lat and Long columns, and hit ”Continue”. Hover the mouse over the question marks to see sample data from that column.

Tip: If there is no latitude and longitude information, it is possible to use addresses in the columns instead.

Now pick the column to use to title the markers. For this example, select the Date column and hit Finish.

Users should now see their data as a layer in the menu, and their points plotted on the map. To change the name of this layer in the menu, select the text of the layer name (the default will be the file name).


Turn addresses into coordinates

Note: Proceed to the next step if you already have a dataset with coordinates.

A quick and simple way to get coordinates for addresses is to use the LocalFocus Geocoder.

To begin, copy-paste the relevant cells with addresses in the text field. Excluding any column headers, users can do this with a whole column of data.

Click “Add to geocoder”. Now check the results.

If any addresses return as failures, check the language settings.

Does Excel or Google Drive use a comma or a point as a separator? Use the same settings for the geocoder.

Now the results are ready to transfer to the original table.

To do that, copy the results from the geocoder and paste the addresses next to the original data. Leave the first row empty.

In the first row, leave space for the column headers such as address, latitude, and longitude.

Start a map project

Now that you have a table with coordinates, you are ready to put the data on a map.

The next step is to add the data. An empty spreadsheet will appear.

Paste the new table containing the coordinates into the empty spreadsheet. The addresses will automatically appear on the map.

If no mapped points appear, check that the latitude and longitude columns are referenced correctly.


Click the “Create your first map” button. Name the map, click “Continue” and you’re ready to start.

To map addresses from Excel, upload the Excel file into the platform. This will generate an interactive, customizable Google Map within seconds.

Select the columns on the spreadsheet that contain location data. Most of these are automatically matched based on the information entries.

Or choose one of these alternative methods to create a map:

  • Use the API to connect your data directly to the map for real-time updates.
  • Connect your Google Spreadsheet data to the platform. Changes made on the Google Spreadsheet will automatically be reflected on the map.
  • Start with a blank map and add locations manually one at a time.

With the initial map created,users can customize their map by using the tools provided. Maps can be shared, saved, or embedded in a website or blog post.


Users must first install QGIS, an open-source GIS, and MMQGIS. The MMQGIS plugin adds geocoding capabilities to QGIS.

Feeding it the list of addresses, will output a list of geographic coordinates.

Geocoding requires that the data is in CSV (comma-separated values). A CSV file is a spreadsheet without all the formatting and colors found in Excel.

On the spreadsheet, separate addresses into columns for “address”, “city”, “state” and “country”. Addresses in a single column should be separated into individual fields before geocoding.

For example:

Address: 630 Old Country Road

City: Garden City

State (or equivalent outside US): NY

Country: USA

If using your own data, you can convert the spreadsheet to a CSV file in Excel or any other spreadsheet program.

To map addresses from Excel in this way, open the spreadsheet and select “Save As”. Then choose “CSV (Comma delimited)” from the “Save as type” option.

With the data in the correct format, it’s now possible to geocode it in QGIS. In the menu bar go to MMQGIS → Geocode → Geocode CSV with Google / OpenStreetMap.

Click ”Browse” and select your CSV.

The geocoder needs to know which columns represent the individual address components. MMQGIS will do it’s best to detect the appropriate column names (and its best is often very good).

In some instances the column names may be obscure or written in a different language. Users can click on the dropdown menu and choose the correct column in their CSV.

There is also a choice of web services to perform the geocoding. Users can opt for Google or OpenStreetMap/Nominatim.

Ensure that the Output Shapefile path and the Not Found Output List path are valid. It is also important to have permission to write to that location.

To change the path, click on the “Browse” button, and choose the preferred location.

Geocoded results are stored as a Shapefile which is a collection of at least four files (.shp, .shx, .dbf, .prj).

The Shapefile is the de facto standard for storing GIS data. It is supported by the majority of mapping applications, including Mango.

Also stored is a second file containing a CSV of records that could not be successfully geocoded. These records usually have an incomplete address, spelling mistakes, or are in remote areas not covered by the geocoder.

Hit ”OK” to proceed with the geocoding.

When the geocoding is complete, address points will appear in QGIS as circle markers. If the base map is not turned on in QGIS, they will display as floating points against white.

This is normal and means that the geocoding is complete. The geocoded coordinates are now in a Shapefile in the Output Location.

Go to the folder containing the notfound.csv file to see which addresses weren’t located. In this case, an empty CSV is a good result.

Upload the Shapefile to Mango following these instructions:

1. Select the “Create New Map” button in the administration sidebar.

2. When the map is ready, click “Layers”, then click on the “Add Layer” button.

3. Now click on “Upload Dataset”

4. Here users can select the type of data they want to upload. In this example it is a Shapefile, so there is no need to change anything.

Click on ”Select files”.

5. Navigate to the Output Location and select the four files of the Shapefile generated by the geocoder. Upload them to Mango.

To select multiple files at once, press and hold Ctrl and click each file (⌘ + click for Mac).

6. Once the upload is complete, hit “Save” and Mango will process the data.
